Thunder Are Rocked As Lavigne Is Number Six
Eric Lavigne admitted today it's a big wrench to leave
Hull Thunder. The Canadian's decision to quit comes after five team-mates were axed last week.
They paid the penalty for Thunder's dismal run of 12 defeats in 16 league games.
But Thunder bosses were hoping Lavigne would stay and consider coaching the
side. Instead the fans' favourite flies home on Wednesday to join Thetford Mines
Prolab.
Lavigne said: "Last summer I was offered a job back home, but I told them I
would honour my contract in Hull.
"A month ago they contacted me again and again I said no, I wanted to
respect my contract.
"But on Saturday night I called them and said yes I'd join them because of
what's happened over the last week.
"To put it politely what's happened in Hull is not good.
"I could understand it if they'd axed one or two players, but not five
guys."
Lavigne said the remaining players would face a tough task for the rest of the
season. He was also concerned about the financial situation: "They said we'd be
paid OK, but my wife and I felt we would be taking a chance if we'd
stayed."
Lavigne revealed he had also turned down a coaching role, adding: "They did
talk to me about it, but Mike Bishop did more than just playing and coaching.
"But my wife and I have made our decision.
"We feel sad leaving the fans, they've been great to me.
"I've had some great times here over the last 16 months.
"It was tough playing last night against Newcastle with everyone yelling my
name.
"I feel very sorry for them because it seems like every season something
bad happens to the club."
However, Lavigne revealed he wants to return to Britain next season, and had not
ruled out a return to Hull.
Thunder forward Marc West also looks set to quit and has been outspoken in his
criticism over the sacking of five fellow imports.
West said: "I don't want to end my career on a downer and lose every night.
"Thunder are not pushing me out, they told me the club is safe for the rest
of the season.
"But if we don't make the play-offs it's two pay cheques.
"I don't want my season to end in mid-February."
Thunder director Mike O'Connor, who has not ruled out the possibility of taking
over the coaching, said Lavigne's departure was a blow.
"Until Saturday we thought Eric would be staying, but I can understand he
has to look after his career.
"The job back home is too attractive to turn down."
O'Connor said Thunder intend to replace Lavigne, and West if he quits this week.
